Downloadable Furniture (via Tree Hugger)

A collection of furniture, collectively called ‘Inside Out Furniture’, whose instructions can be downloaded and can be made with local resources.

From the designers, Minale Maeda:

DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY TO BE DOWNLOADABLE IN ORDER TO REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES RELATED TO TRANSPORT, COSTS OF STOCKKEEPING AND EXPLORE COLLABORATIVE DESIGN AND DISTRIBUTION, THIS FURNITURE CAN BE EDITED IN SIZE AND MATERIALS, IS MADE ON LOCATION OR CAN BE SELF-MADE BY DOWNLOADING THE BLUEPRINTS. THE CONCEPT WAS TO TURN THE PIECES INSIDE OUT TO MAKE CONSTRUCTION SIMPLE, WHILE BRACKETS AND STRUCTURAL DETAILS BECOME DISTINCTIVE AND ATTRACTIVE FEATURES. THE CONNECTIONS ARE 3D PRINTED TO SUIT VARIOUS SIZES OF WOOD, AND THE CRAFTING IS MINIMAL REQUIRING ONLY CUTTING TO LENGTH AND DRILLING.

Simple idea, though a shame that the connection parts have to be 3D printed.

Turn Old Tires into a Storage Bin via Curbly | DIY Design Community
The most original use for an old tire I have seen yet. This would be extremely simple to make as well. A flat lid with a handle, and some salvaged castors and your old tires have a new lease on life.
Author’s note: A very good cleaning and a couple coats of low VOC paint should make the tires safe for in home use. (I do not recommend bringing them inside without sealing them)
Author’s second note: If you are too scared to use these inside (And I understand completely) I am sure you have toys outside that could be rounded up with one or more of these.

You really have to hand it to an artist who can make robots - those scary, creepy, maniacal creatures - into something so adorable. Donna Provo Leuck is one such artist.

The work of John Golden takes vintage robot illustration in a surreal direction.

Of this well-known photograph of sunlight streaming into New York’s Grand Central Station as commuters make their way across the concourse, Stalman says:

The lesson is that this is something you can see anywhere — when you wake up in the morning, or walking down a hallway in a museum, or just working in a backyard shed. Everything that the light is hitting here is being lit up. So you don’t always have to think of your subject as being lit. Sometimes the light itself can be the subject. After all, none of the people here are doing much at all, they’re kind of just acting as background. It’s all about the light, the light, the light.

Photo tip #2: Light Can Be Your Subject, Not Just a Tool

Happy Birthday Box

utnereader:

Andrew Carnegie built an impressive 2,509 libraries around the turn of the 20th century. Now Rick Brooks and Todd Bol are on a mission to top his total with their two-foot by two-foot Little Free Libraries.

The diminutive, birdhouse-like libraries, which Brooks and Bol began installing in Hudson and Madison, Wisconsin, in 2009, are typically made of wood and Plexiglas and are designed to hold about 20 books for community members to borrow and enjoy. Offerings include anything from Russian novels and gardening guides to French cookbooks and Dr. Seuss.
